Snæfellsnes, ending at Kirkjufell

Your Day Tours takes a minibus of 19 around the south and west of the peninsula and saves Kirkjufell for last, with about 25 minutes before the drive home. Book it for a small group at close to the coach price, and for the evening light on the mountain from spring to early autumn.

Snæfellsnes & Kirkjufell Small-Group Tour

About this experience

Your Day Tours collects you from set pickup points in downtown Reykjavik from 8:00. It won't come to Airbnb flats, suburban hotels or the airport, so find the nearest point on its list. The day starts on the south side: a short stop in Borgarnes, 25 minutes with the seals at Ytri Tunga, the black church at Búðir, then 50 minutes in Arnarstapi for the cliff path and something to eat. Djúpalónssandur gets 45 minutes. On the north coast you stop at Ingjaldshólskirkja, a concrete church from 1903, before Kirkjufell for about 25 minutes. Drop-off is around 7 p.m.

Ending at Kirkjufell is lovely from May to August. The midday crowds have gone and the light is softer. In the dark months it works against you: in late December the sun sets around 3.30 p.m. in Reykjavik (timeanddate.com), so a last stop late in the afternoon is at dusk or after dark. If you're travelling between November and February, the premium small group, which stops at Kirkjufell first, is the safer choice.

There's no meal. The guide stops at places where you can buy food and snacks, so pack something for the long stretches. Seats are tight when the bus is full: one guest called the back row "packed in like sardines". And a reviewer's warning applies to every tour here: there are very few toilets on the peninsula. The bus can't take luggage either, so don't plan this on the day you check out.

  • A small group of 19 at most, with Wi-Fi on board
  • 50 minutes in Arnarstapi and 45 on Djúpalónssandur
  • Seals at Ytri Tunga and the black church at Búðir
  • Ingjaldshólskirkja, a 1903 concrete church on the north coast
  • Kirkjufell as the last stop, in the evening light in summer

Great way to see so much of west iceland in one day and capture an amazing variety of views. Our tour guide (Dovi) was incredible and so thoughtful with all the added stories and history and background during the trip. It’s a long day but beyond worth it.

What an incredible day! It was a long tour with plenty of stops, but we saw and experienced so much that every km felt worth it. Monica was an amazing guide - patient, knowledgeable, and always helpful. [...]

My friend and I had a wonderful time. Paul was the perfect driver and shared so much great history, geology and folklore. Snaellfeness is a wild and beautiful Peninsula but be careful! There are very few bathrooms.... Don't drink too much coffee before you go!

Tips before you book

  • Use the toilet at every stop that has one. They are few and far between.
  • Bring a packed lunch, or plan to buy it in Arnarstapi, the longest stop of the day.
  • Board early if legroom matters: the back row is the tightest seat on a full bus.
  • Be at your pickup point at the exact time on your ticket, not when the bus appears.
  • Leave your suitcase at the hotel. The tour can't store or carry luggage.
