The classic Snæfellsnes coach tour

BusTravel Iceland's big coach leaves Reykjavik for a full loop of the peninsula, with Kirkjufell as the second of eight stops and about half an hour at the mountain and its waterfall. Pick it for the price: it's the cheapest guided way to stand in front of Kirkjufell, and the most reviewed.

Snæfellsnes Classic Day Tour from Reykjavik

About this experience

This is the tour most people book. You meet the coach at Bus Stop 12 at Höfðatorg (Þórunnartún 1), or pay extra to be collected from your hotel, and head north through Borgarnes to the peninsula. The first stop is the Berserkjahraun lava field, 15 minutes. Then comes Kirkjufell, about 30 minutes at the mountain and at Kirkjufellsfoss, the small waterfall across the road that frames the famous photo. After that the coach rounds the tip of the peninsula below Snæfellsjökull: an hour in the national park, Djúpalónssandur and its lifting stones, the Lóndrangar sea stacks, the cliffs at Arnarstapi, the seals at Ytri Tunga and the black church at Búðir.

Because Kirkjufell comes early, you see it in the morning or around midday, which helps in winter, when the light goes by mid-afternoon. Half an hour covers the walk from the car park to the falls, the footbridge and a good set of photos. Nobody climbs the mountain on this or any other tour: West Iceland's tourism site calls the slopes steep and slippery, says climbing is strictly prohibited in winter, and after three deaths in four years the landowners closed it to all walkers from November 2022 to June 2023.

The trade-off is the coach. It takes up to 65 people, and reviewers notice. One couple couldn't sit together because the coach was already full of passengers who had grabbed the window seats. Another wished some stops ran longer than 15 minutes, since late returners eat into everyone's time. Food isn't included, so lunch is whatever you bring or buy at the Snjófell restaurant in Arnarstapi. If those things matter, the premium small group from the same company runs a similar route with 19 seats.

Our guide, Gummi, was awesome. He provided us with useful info, described the history of Iceland briefly and clearly. He also gave us a musical tour, with fascinating information about key Icelandic musicians e.g. Bjork, and played their music for us [...]

Tips before you book

  • Check the meeting point on your ticket. One guest waited at Bus Stop 12 while the booking system expected her at the BSÍ terminal.
  • Travelling as a pair? Board early. Once the coach fills, the free seats are often single aisle seats.
  • Pack lunch and snacks. The only real food stop is 30 minutes in Arnarstapi.
  • Watch the clock at the short stops (10 to 15 minutes). The day already runs past 11 hours.
  • Wear waterproof shoes: the coach runs in all weather, and the paths at Djúpalónssandur and Arnarstapi get wet.
