Kirkjufell first, in a small group

BusTravel Iceland's small-group version of its classic tour drives straight to Kirkjufell, gives it 20 minutes, then works around the glacier to Djúpalónssandur, Arnarstapi and the seals. Choose it in the dark months: the mountain comes first, in the best light of a short winter day.

Premium Snæfellsnes Small-Group Day Trip

About this experience

This is the small-group sister of the classic coach tour, from the same company. Pickup is included from selected hotels, guesthouses and official bus stops in central Reykjavik. The bus heads north past the Berserkjahraun lava field and stops at Kirkjufell first, for about 20 minutes. Then it's the national park for an hour, Djúpalónssandur (35 minutes), the Lóndrangar viewpoint, 40 minutes in Arnarstapi, the black church at Búðir and the seals at Ytri Tunga before the drive home.

Why first matters: in late December the sun sets around 3.30 p.m. in Reykjavik (timeanddate.com). Tours that end at Kirkjufell arrive at dusk, or in the dark. This one gets there late in the morning, as the light comes up. In summer the order matters less, but you still beat the midday crowd at the falls. The price is the short stop: 20 minutes is enough for the walk to the falls and a few photos, not much more.

Some guests warn about the walking. One found plenty of steep paths up and down, and another said Ytri Tunga's uneven rocks are hard going in rain. And a 19-seat bus isn't roomy when it's full: a March 2026 guest felt so cramped he couldn't get his phone out of his pocket. Food isn't included. Children must be at least 8.

What guests say

★★★★★

We were incredibly fortunate that our guide Giuseppe is an actual geologist. So knowledgeable about volcanoes and was able to describe in detail the geologic landscape we observed. The tour was very well run and interesting with some of the most extraordinary landscape we have ever seen.

A chance to see a wonderful part of Iceland. There are mountains, waterfalls, black sand beaches, lava fields, sheep, horses, churches and seals...what's not to love?! Siggi, our guide, made the day fun too.

An absolutely amazing day!!! Our guide Harald very informative and got us to all the beautiful spots!! Despite the rain, snow, and windy conditions, a great tour to see this majestic landscape. Highly recommend.

The tour is pretty well coordinated! You got ample time to hangout at each of the stops. The focus is seeing and walking along coastlines to see the ocean and rock formations. Also the Kirkjufell is so impressive in person.

Tips before you book

  • Have your camera ready when the bus parks at Kirkjufell. 20 minutes goes fast.
  • Wear boots with grip. Ytri Tunga's rocks and the Arnarstapi paths get slippery in rain.
  • Pack lunch or buy it in Arnarstapi, the 40-minute stop.
  • Dress for wind on the sea cliffs: a September guest dressed for it and was still chilly.
  • Tall? Ask for a front seat when you board.
