Booking choice: The Nicetravel small group, from $154 per person. Check dates Tour details
Snæfellsnes tours come in two sizes. BusTravel Iceland's classic tour runs a coach of up to 65. Everyone else on this site runs a minibus of 17 to 19. Prices overlap more than you would expect: the small groups start just $7 above the coach.
We set the listings side by side and read what guests say about space, stops and pace, good and bad.
The quick answer
The big coach costs $143, takes up to 65 and gives about 30 minutes at Kirkjufell; hotel pickup is extra. Small groups cost $150 to $164 for up to 19, usually with pickup included, and the same 20 to 40 minutes at the mountain. Pick the coach on price alone. Pick a small group for faster stops, pickup, and a guide who knows your name. Small does not mean roomy: minibuses run full.

What is the difference between a small-group and a big-bus Snæfellsnes tour?
Group size and pickup. The route, the stops and the length of the day are close to identical.
Side by side:

|---|---|---|
| Example | Classic day tour | Nicetravel, Your Day Tours, premium |
| Group | Up to 65 | Up to 17 to 19 |

| At Kirkjufell | About 30 min | 20 to 40 min |
| Length | 11 h | 11 to 12 h |
| Youngest age | 2 | 4 to 8 |
Up to 19 guests and free hotel pickup, with Kirkjufell as the last stop of the day.
Check dates for the Nicetravel small groupHow much more does a small-group tour cost?
As little as $7. The cheapest small group is $150 against $143 for the coach, and hotel pickup on the coach costs extra anyway.
Once you add pickup to the coach ticket, the gap almost closes. Your Day Tours at $150 picks up from downtown points; Nicetravel at $154 offers free hotel pickup; BusTravel's own premium small group at $164 includes pickup and reaches Kirkjufell first. Above that you pay for lunch, not for a smaller bus: the farm lunch tour at $224 and the Gateway to Iceland minibus at $234.
Do you get more time at the stops in a small group?
Not on paper: listed stops are similar. In practice you lose less of each stop getting on and off.
The listed times at Kirkjufell are about 30 minutes on the coach and 20 to 40 on the minibuses. The difference is what happens around them. On a full coach, getting 60 people off, through one door and back on again takes time, and the bus leaves when the last person is back. One coach guest wished for more than 15 minutes at some stops "to cut down on people not sticking to the set departure time." On the cruise excursion, with up to 59 aboard, a guest at the back said getting off took "10 minutes of our allotted time".
Small groups get through a stop faster and can switch the order when a car park is full. One Nicetravel guest had "plenty of time at each stop without feeling rushed".

Are small-group minibuses comfortable?
They are full. A group of 19 means a minibus with every seat taken, and the back row is the tightest place for 11 hours.
Do not picture a spacious van. Guests on two different small-group tours complained about it: "Bus was packed to maximum making back row extremely uncomfortable", wrote one; another said he "couldn’t get my phone out my pocket". The coach has bigger seats and more legroom per person, even if it holds more people.
Two tips. If you are picked up early, you choose your seat. If you are tall, ask at pickup for a front or aisle seat, and don't be the last one back on the bus.
Which Snæfellsnes tours include hotel pickup?
Nicetravel, EastWest and the premium small group pick up from hotels. Your Day Tours and Arctic Adventures use set downtown points. The classic coach charges extra.
Central Reykjavik restricts big vehicles, so even "hotel pickup" often means the nearest marked bus stop, a few minutes' walk. The details:
- Classic coach: free from Bus Stop 12 at Höfðatorg, Þórunnartún 1; hotel pickup costs extra, and the pickup window runs up to 30 minutes.
- Nicetravel: free hotel pickup, or the nearest bus stop in the centre.
- EastWest farm lunch: hotel pickup from 8:30 to about 9:00.
- Your Day Tours: listed downtown points only; no Airbnbs or suburbs.
- Arctic Adventures: listed points only.
Does the route differ between the big bus and small groups?
Mostly in direction. The coach and the premium tour see Kirkjufell in the morning; most small groups finish there.
The classic coach goes clockwise: Berserkjahraun, then Kirkjufell, then the national park, Djúpalónssandur, Arnarstapi, Ytri Tunga and Búðakirkja. Small groups like Your Day Tours and Nicetravel start on the south coast with the seals and the black church, and end at Kirkjufell. A few add their own stops: the red-roofed church at Ingjaldshóll on Your Day Tours, the basalt columns at Gerðuberg on the Gateway minibus.
In summer, finishing at Kirkjufell gives softer light. In midwinter, it can mean arriving after dark.

Who should book the big bus?
Budget travellers, families with toddlers, and anyone who can walk to Höfðatorg. At $143 it is the cheapest way to Kirkjufell.
The classic tour is rated 4.8 by more than 1,600 guests, so the coach is clearly not a bad day. It takes children from age 2, which no small group does. Book it if price matters most, if you are fine with a fixed meeting point, and if you like sitting high above the road with big windows.
One practical warning from a guest: couples who board late can end up apart, because others take the window seats first. Be at the stop early.

The lowest price to Kirkjufell: a guided coach loop of the whole peninsula with about 30 minutes at the falls.
Explore the classic Snæfellsnes day tour Tour detailsWhat is the smallest group you can book?
The Gateway to Iceland minibus caps at 17, with lunch included. All other small groups cap at 19.
Gateway to Iceland runs with a minimum of four adults and a maximum of 17, and it splits the Kirkjufell stop into 20 minutes at the falls and 10 at the mountain itself. Lunch at the community house in Arnarstapi is included, which makes the $234 price easier to understand. For a group smaller than that you need a private tour, which none of our listings are.

Frequently asked questions
Is a small-group Snæfellsnes tour worth the extra money?
Usually, yes: the gap is $7 to $21 for a group of 19 instead of 65, plus pickup. It is not worth it if you want more space; minibuses run full.
How many people are on the big Snæfellsnes bus?
Up to 65 on BusTravel Iceland's classic tour, and up to 59 on its shore excursion from Grundarfjörður.
Do small groups spend longer at Kirkjufell?
Not always. The Arctic Adventures small group lists about 40 minutes, but the premium small group lists 20. The coach lists 30.
Can I bring luggage on a Snæfellsnes day tour?
Not usually. Your Day Tours says it cannot store or carry suitcases, and the two-day tour allows only a small backpack.
