Kirkjufellsfoss parking fee 2026

The car park below Kirkjufell is paid, watched by cameras and charged around the clock. Most blogs still quote an older, lower price.

If you drive to Kirkjufell, you park at the falls, and you pay. The car park sits on private land and is run by a parking company, with cameras reading number plates.

Online guides quote anything from 750 to 1,000 ISK. The operator's own page lists more than that for 2026. Here is the current price, the three ways to pay, and what happens if you drive off without paying.

The quick answer

Parking at Kirkjufellsfoss costs 1,400 ISK for a small car, 1,800 ISK for a medium vehicle and 6,400 ISK for a large one, per the operator Sannir Landvættir as of October 2026. Pay the same day with the EasyPark app, the QR code on the signs or the payment machine. Miss it and you get a 4,500 ISK non-payment fee on top. Tour passengers pay nothing extra: the operator covers the bus.

How much is the Kirkjufellsfoss parking fee in 2026?

1,400 ISK for a small car, 1,800 ISK for a medium vehicle and 6,400 ISK for a large one, charged 24 hours a day, all year.

The figures come from the operator's own page, sannir.is/kf, checked on 15 October 2026. It says the prices are discounted while construction work is going on at the site, so expect them to rise once it is finished. The page states "Gjaldskylda er allan sólarhringinn, alla daga ársins": the fee applies around the clock, every day of the year.

Why the lower numbers online? Many travel blogs still repeat older rates of 750 or 1,000 ISK. Trust the sign at the entrance and the operator's page over any blog, this one included.

How do you pay for parking at Kirkjufellsfoss?

Three ways: the EasyPark app, the QR code on the signs, or the digital payment machine. Cameras log your plate on arrival.

Sannir lists the EasyPark app (scan the QR code on the sign or enter the zone in the app), a digital payment machine with a QR code, and CameraPark, an automatic option where the app charges you when the camera reads your plate. There is no cash. Pay before you leave, or at the latest the same day.

Set up EasyPark before the trip. Typing card details in the wind with frozen fingers is no fun, and the same app works at many other paid car parks around Iceland.

What happens if you don't pay the Kirkjufellsfoss parking fee?

A 4,500 ISK non-payment fee on top of the parking charge, plus a 250 ISK electronic invoice fee. Rental companies usually add their own handling charge.

The operator's page is clear: anyone who does not pay within the same day gets a 4,500 ISK non-payment fee, and the electronic invoice costs 250 ISK more. The bill goes to the registered owner, which for most visitors is the car rental company. Zero Car Rental, for example, adds a fixed ISK 2,000 handling fee to any unpaid fee it receives.

This has made the news. In August 2025 Morgunblaðið ran the headline "Rukkuð um hátt í sex þúsund við Kirkjufell", which translates as "charged close to six thousand at Kirkjufell". Paying 1,400 ISK on the spot is the cheap option.

ScenarioWhat you pay (small car)
Paid in the app the same day1,400 ISK
Not paid the same day1,400 + 4,500 + 250 = 6,150 ISK
Same, billed through a rental companyAbout 6,150 ISK plus the rental firm's fee

No app, no parking bill, no rental surcharge: the tour pays the car park.

Who runs the Kirkjufellsfoss car park, and where does the money go?

Sannir Landvættir ehf., a parking company that runs it for the landowners. It says the fees pay for access, year-round operation and safety.

The land at Kirkjufell is privately owned. Sannir Landvættir ehf. (Askalind 1, Kópavogur) operates the car park and lists its phone number, +354 587 0444, on the payment page. According to that page, the fees fund better access, keeping the site open all year, and safety and quality upkeep.

Paid parking at nature sites is now standard in Iceland. The Reykjavík Grapevine reported in 2025 that about 1,000 ISK per visit is the usual rate and that fines tend to be three to four times the original fee, and that the Consumer Agency had fined parking companies over unclear payment information. At Kirkjufell the signs at the entrance carry the prices and the QR code.

Do tour passengers pay the Kirkjufellsfoss parking fee?

No. On a tour the operator pays for the bus, and the shore excursion from Grundarfjörður even lists Kirkjufell admission as included.

Every Snæfellsnes day tour stops in this car park, and none of them asks passengers for parking money. The shore excursion from the Grundarfjörður pier shows "Admission Ticket Included" for its 50-minute Kirkjufell stop. The bus is billed at the vehicle rate, not per head, and that cost is already inside the ticket price.

Whether that tips the maths toward a tour depends on more than parking: fuel, a rental car, the 2.5-hour drive each way and winter roads. Driving yourself or taking a tour runs the full numbers, and our guide to Kirkjufell tours from Reykjavik compares the tours themselves.
